DHD music poll

I'd be happy to spend some time writing and performing a brief piece of orchestral music for DHDer's amusement if there is sufficient interest. It would use the musical motif D-E-B-F, and be written in the Phrygian (aka "Phryschian") mode. (Props to SBH for coining the term.)

Please be advised that this would likely take me 7-10 days to complete, due to its time-intensive nature (and the fact that I haven't yet won the Mega Lotto and so must relegate this to a back-burner).

But hey, I like you guys and it would be a fun little project.

Presuming that anybody might like to hear some examples, I'd be happy to share a couple of mp3s if somebody's willing to host them. (I really need to put a website together.) I'm thinking of two pieces which could be "rebranded" to make them DHD-pertinent; one's about 2:20 and the other is 1:00 in length.

Since I'm on the "shameless self-promotion" bandwagon this morning, I also write and produce radio ads. (Earned part of my living for nearly two decades in L.A. thusly.) If any of you work in advertising, I'd be delighted to get you a radio demo reel.

Hokay...I've got a rugged day today, so I probably won't be able to respond to anything until this evening. Feel free to leave your comments, derisive screeds or outright hate mail; I'll see ya''ll this evening (EST) at Sinner & Sulla's place.

Sounds like a great idea. I can clap my hands semi-rhythmically, if that would be a helpful addition.

That might be quite helpful if I do a disjointed tarentella or something weird. (Not that I'd ever do music that somebody might think was weird. Or creepy. Or diseased.)

SBH -

Sounds like you're married to a muso. And, come to think of it, may be one yourself; who the hell else knows (much less cares) about church modes with funny names?

I double-checked the longer piece; it's actually a hair under 2:00 (with the ring off from the crash cymbal and timps...let's just say I went a wee bit reverb crazy trying for a "concert hall" ambience).

Regardless of the outcome, I appreciate your attempt.

It just doesn't seem right that I get more exclamation points than DENNY CRANE! (Although it is fewer than in STARFLEET COMMANDER!!!!)

But I gotta admit the melody's catchy.

I tried an exclamation point after my nic in a comment directed at Denny last night and decided it wasn't funny.

But it is when you do it.

I guess I have no comedic flair. (He exclaimed.)

I'm sorry. I meant that it's my rhythm that's off, not your music.

I apologize.

You know far too much for your own good.

Tell me you're not a player. (I know you didn't pick that stuff up casually.)

Both composers you mentioned are not faves of mine. Ditto Berg, Gorecki, Stockhausen and many others.

I went through my brief flirtation with avant garde "classical" and jazz as a yout' and quickly decided that thimhs like meter and melody were actually desireable 99% of the time. Call me old-fashioned...

But I do like Ginastera, Prokofiev, Stravinsky (what an orchestrator!), Bartok. Shostakovich, Khatchaturian and others.

Plus Bernard Herrmann and Carl Stalling, of course.

Not to worry, kiddo; I got your original meaning five-by-five. Just poking fun at myself, mostly. (I hope you're not shocked to discover that I do so from time to time.)

But I appreciate that you're snarky and sensitive. (Two words which definitely describe my RL friends, too; I'm horribly consistent and predictable in some ways.)

thimhs = things

Now you know why I wasn't a performance major.

I knew it! You and your husband certainly have broad musical backgrounds.

Good vocal coaches (which I'm betting describes you) are a blessing. I went to one years ago to improve my ability to sing back-ups; the results were amazing to me.

(Still don't like the sound of my own voice solo; kind of lounge-y for my taste. I'm a baritone, and if I can't be in the same league as Joe Williams and Lou Rawls, fugeddabouttit.)

I heard a lot of Bill Evans as a kid, as he was a favorite of my Dad's; what a harmonic pallette. Also love Oscar Peterson (among many others).

If you guys don't own Oscar's "Night Train" CD (from '64, I believe, with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen), it might make a nice gift for him.

It's arguably my favorite piano jazz trio recording of all time.

Thanks a bunch! I'm tickled you both liked it.

And that would be "bravo"; my real name's the same as your husband's.

I'll probably post some more stuff (hey, it's free server space!); will keep you advised.

I did that piece right before Xmas, '99 when I got the Kurzweil. It started out as a test to ensure I'd connected everything properly to the 'puter and mixer.

And you probably know how that goes.

I'm stunned by the quality of the latest software orchestral instruments. Not to mention the ridiculously fair prices.

You and David should check out www.garritan.com (too tired to make a linky). If you're not aware of their stuff, I think you'll be fairly amazed.

I don't own "Night Train", but I think I drank some in the 70's.

I like your Deb music. The little yellow & red cartoon that came with it was, good, too. It needed more dogs in it.

Nedra

Bet you can still taste that vile stuff. Eeeuuu!

The next one probably won't have more dogs, either; but more cowbell is a distinct possibility.

fatwa, you know what i like about you (among many other things)?

you call me ottava on dhd.

i don't DISlike anyone who calls me otta, not at all. i feel priviledged to have a nickname and be addressed at all.

but you have a special place in my heart, because you seem to know italian poetry.

plus. my dog has a big crush on you.

you think i'm kidding?

...you seem to know italian poetry.

Much as I'd love to claim this is so, I cannot.

However, in classical music, written "instructions" on the parts are generally given in Italian.

Ottava tells you to play the part up an octave from where it is written (unless followed by basso" which indicates down an octave). This is usually done to improve the readability of a part.

I know that "Rima" can be a female given name; my first thought was actually that you were from a large Italian family. Never thought to try Babelfish.

I got it right, but for the wrong reason.

Honest to a fault...that's me.

I'm deee-double-lighted that your beastie's situation is considerably less dire than we'd feared; please feel free to lavish additional affection in my name at your discretion. (Dogs are some of the finest folks I know.)

It's swell having a couple of fans in Durham!
